At the end of Ben and Kirsty Carlson’s two-year project to support Burundian coffee farmers, they realised they had only benefited the roasters.
Fortunately, they didn’t give up. Instead, they invested in Burundi by opening a washing mill, and began the long task of improving cup profiles, creating direct trade relationships, and making coffee production sustainable in one of the world’s poorest countries (IMF, World Bank).
